JEWISH CULTURE DAYS IN BUKOVYNA

The festival ( August 5-12) offered all the opportunity to get to deepen the knowledge of the culture and language of East Central European Jews by attending lectures, master classes, musical and theatrical events, and Yiddish film screenings with Ukrainian subtitles.

International commemorative conference of Yiddish culture and language in Chernivtsi took place on August 6-9, 2018 at Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University. The opening of the conference was at Red Hall.

Conference organizers: The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, International Center for Language and Culture of Yiddish at the World Jewish Congress (Vilnius, Lithuania), Center for Studies of the History and Culture of East European Jews of National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”, Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University together with Chernivtsi City Council, Chernivtsi Museum of Jewish History and Culture of Bukovyna; with the financial and organizational support of the World Jewish Congress, Ukrainian Jewish Encounter (Canada), the VAAD of Ukraine and  Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (Kyiv).

The organizers and honorary guests of the conference delivered special messages during the opening ceremony.The co-chairman of the Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities of Ukraine VAAD Josef Zisels, Rector of Chernivtsi National University Stepan Melnychuk, Head of the Committee on Culture and Spirituality Mykola Kniazhytskyi, The Main Rabbi of Bukovyna Menachem Mendel Glisnschtain, Vice-President of the World Jewish Congress Yurii Kaner, Professor of Hebrew University of Jerusalem Member of the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter Wolf Moskovych, Head of the Department for Monitoring the Activities and Registration of the Statutes of Religious Organizations of the Department for the Affairs of Religions and Nationalities of the Ministry of Culture Ivan Papayani, First Deputy Head of Chernivtsi Regional State Administration Mykhailo Pavliuk, Secretary of Chernivtsi City Council Vasyl Prodan and other respectable guests visited the conference.

There are many other interesting things ahead, including: tour to Vyzhnytsia, Chernivtsi sightseeing walk tour, Ruth Levin concert at Chernivtsi Philharmonics and movie screening in the framework of “Jewish Movie Week”.
