The Botanic Garden was founded in 1877 with a mission to establish the research center to promote learning and glorification of nature in Chernivtsi. In the almost 150 years since then, although many people and plants have been involved in the history of the Botanic Garden, we continue to educate as many people as possible about the importance of plants, to help conserve plants around the world and to support teaching and research at the University and beyond.
In 1956 the Arboretum on the territory of the Residence of Bukovynian Metropolitans became the structural unit of the Botanic Garden. The biggest part of the arboretum is a landscape. Rare species of trees are mingled with the native ones: maples, oaks, lime-trees and hornbeams. They build up a solid defensive line all around the park. This line is supposed to provide the total isolation of the park thus creating the atmosphere of serenity.
The Botanic Garden is the most compact, yet diverse collection of plants in Ukraine right in the heart of the city centre and is open throughout the year for you to visit and enjoy. Visiting the Botanic Garden gives the opportunity to see the Bukovyna’s flora, Red Book plants, over 1000 introduced plants (mainly from Oriental countries, Japan, China, and North America). Botanic Garden inspires and take you around the World or simply allows you to relax in the oldest Botanic Garden in Ukraine.
